Here is what past participants say about MAMM ..
"I would insist that anyone trying to find something new in their art or trying to find a different inspiration take this short (session) and learn about the beauty of expressing your untouched ideas that are dwelling on your minds backburner. It was an experience i will not forget."
"I think you provided a very welcoming environment and open slate. It is nice to feel a safe sense of the unknown without too many guidelines, restrictions or worries. I enjoyed myself."
"I really appreciate the generous space that you have created to play, research and fuel the richness of collaboration between disciplines. On our end it was very useful not only in tapping into the potential of integrating sound into our work, but it helped us flesh out movement in a unique way that would not have been possible without the enlivening input of live musicians and feedback."
"I really liked seeing these dancers. I used to think contemporary dance was pretentious but this opened my eyes a lot. These (dancers) were so genuine and talented. Their attitudes have effected me positively.. and showed this ability to tap (into oneself) and be un judgemental. I hope to express my self with such freedom. more please"
"Monday was very fun. It is so nice to be able to actually meet new dancers in a comfortable setting. Although I have seen the (dancers) faces around the city it is always a little weird to introduce yourself at an audition, class or show. Thank you for creating a space for meetings and new beginnings. The music is always incredible..."
" The opportunity to explore both movement and sound with other people in an environment that welcomes full expression is simply a joy. It is hugely to share with others and be encouraged to creatively express without limitations. The fact that you invite participants to employ and investigate a variety of sound and movement ideas in our practice together is a rare opportunity, yet so essential for all artists to further their work. This is important for the development of our artistic expression both as individuals and collaboratively. Clearly all participants benefit. Much of what we delve into can be the basis of successful future performance works. I particularly liked the fact that many of the dancers started to participate in creating improv sounds in the session."
"I loved sitting around the back of the circle listening to the participants some new to each other introduce themselves. stories of Moorish temples, mosques, old homes, familiar bridge permeated the air today in the studio as they thought about architecture and what was important to them. who lived in them who designed it. negative positive space. some made a connection to history the beautiful intricate writings on walls architecture. others was a sentimental connection a house their family built or a bridge the person once crossed everyday to get where they were going reminiscing about how many other lives and people walked passed that narrow pathway. it was magical and in the moment. creativity was spontaneous improvised after their reflections and it felt great to just be around people creating something together out of nothing on a Monday afternoon."
"..I thought the set up of starting with a free improv between musicians and dancers worked really well to get things started. It was good to have time to warm up and to introduce ourselves as well as our hopes for the session."
"I feel so grateful to be involved and for your motivation in bringing together wildly talented contemporary musicians with dancers!! I really appreciate how the first part is an open improv to warm up and see whats present and arising in our collaboration of the day, and then how the second session is to play with structure and more specific ideas. After seeing the live improv and just a question for me in general is what makes improv most interesting to do but also to watch as a performance."
"MOVEMENT AND MUSIC sessions have been a great exploratory platform for me. Being someone who is already knee deep in many genres of music, regularly improvising musically as well as comedically in professional settings, and very familiar with multi-medium arts collaboration, I must say that these sessions have been evoking an entirely new strain of creativity and exploration for me. Aside from the personal development and discoveries I am sure the musicians and dancers are collectively rewarded with on a physical, mental, and, overall, creative level from these sessions, the images and answers discovered from what has truly become a group-oriented machine is undeniably an insanely fulfilling method of dissecting any theme or subject."
