About this Event
Discover the fabulous fungi of Skipwith Common with the Friends of Skipwith Common on a two hour fungi foray led by local mycologist Michael ‘Ziggy’ Senkans.
There are literally thousands of different kinds of fungi in all shapes sizes and colours, with enigmatic names like the beef steak fungus, the jelly ear and the shaggy ink cap.
For most of the year fungal colonies composed of a network of underground threads (or mycelium) remain undetected, although they play an important part in the ecosystem. But in the cooler, damp conditions of autumn the fruiting bodies of fungi, such as mushrooms, can be spotted as they begin to feed and grow amongst the fallen leaves.
Some are edible, some are poisonous. Some are spore droppers and some are spore shooters.
So come and explore the weird and wonderful world of fungi and find out if you are a mycophile or a mycophobe.
This walk is free for members of the Friends of Skipwith Common. Non-members will be charged £7 which will include membership up to the AGM in November 2023.
Please note this walk is not suitable for dogs, or children under school age and children under 16 should be accompanied by a responsible adult at all times.
The meeting point is the King Rudding Lane Car Park on Skipwith Common: details of how to get there will be in your confirmation email when you register. Parking is free. Please note that there are no public toilet facilities available.
