MUSHROOM IDENTIFICATION CLASS
JULY 13 - JULY 14 2024 (9am to ~4PM)
ONE DAY $100 OR TWO DAYS WITH CERTIFICATION $275
TAUGHT BY TRADD COTTER (the O.G.)
This mushroom identification class is geared toward identifying the regional edible species as
well as those that are poisonous. Other mushrooms will be discussed as well.
The course will be taught by mycologist Tradd Cotter who actually designed this the first course
approved by South Carolina and several other states. Tradd is the founder of Mushroom
Mountain and now co-owner of Blue Portal Wellness (makers of Blü and Halö mycological
products). He is also the author of the bestselling Organic Mushroom Growing and
Mycoremediation. Tradd has been a keynote speaker at The Telluride Mushroom Festival and
has spoken at many other events. Tradd has much to bring us from the world of fungi. You can

On the first day this course will include foraging and identifying mushrooms with Tradd. Then
Tradd’s powerpoint will go through the edible and poisonous species and their characteristics.
Some of the edible species discussed include chanterelles morels black trumpets lobster
wood ear beefsteak hedgehog lion’s mane oyster cauliflower maitake blewit honey milkies
and even the pecan truffle!
On the second day Tradd will delve deeper into mushroom identification as well as safe
handling and how to present and label wild mushrooms for sale. After the second day the
attendees will take an exam which upon passing will earn them a five-year wild mushroom
certification which is required to sell mushrooms to restaurants and retailers. This certification is
valid in multiple states. No textbook is required but a great book to use to pre-study and
review is Field Guide to Mushrooms of the Carolinas by Bessette Bessette and Hopping. That
