Mushroom Cultivation for Beginners
About this Event
Curious about growing mushrooms at home? The small-group, hands-on course walks you through the complete cultivation process over 3 sessions
Join Somerville's Dan Blum f D.B. Fungi to learn about gourmet mushrooms you can grow at home!
What You'll Learn:
Session 1: Agar & Culture Basics
Saturday Sept. 12th
Learn the foundation of mushroom cultivation. We'll cover the full growing cycle (agar->grain->substrate->fruiting), environmental needs, and different ways growers build a culture library (spores, liquid culture, cloning, and transfers).
You'll practice working in a Still Air Box and learn how to avoid contamination, with live demonstrations of agar transfers and cloning.
Session 2: Agar to Grain
Saturday Sept. 19th
Build on your first session by transferring agar cultures, testing iquid culture on agar, and inoculating grain jars.
We'll focus on substrate and nutrient preparation, review session 1 concepts, and demonstrate agar-to-grain and liquid culture techniques.
Session 3: Fruiting Substrate
Saturday Oct. 3rd
Bring everything together as we inoculate fruiting substrate using colonized grain. We'll review key concepts from Sessions 1 and 2, answer remaining questions and demonstrate the final step that leads to mushroom production
