About this Event
Before, during, and beyond the Black Hospital Movement of the 20th century, Black nurses and physicians in Greater Cleveland made significant contributions to healthcare at home and abroad. They founded hospitals and created community-based clinics while promoting professional growth and enhancing leadership within the medical community.
Through collaborations with fellow healthcare workers, elected officials, hospital associations, social clubs, and families, these pioneers worked to improve the quality of life for everyone. Their efforts laid the groundwork for lasting change.
The significance of their work is documented in the histories of the city's organizations and establishments, including the Cleveland Council of Black Nurses, Forest City Hospital, City Hospital, the Glenville Health Association, Doctors Ph*rm*cy, the Glenville Medical Center, and the Medical Associates Building. Their activities were part of a broader movement to improve medical education and access to quality healthcare.
This exhibition features artifacts, manuscript materials, and books from the Forest City Hospital Collection and the personal archives of members of the Cleveland Council of Black Nurses and the National Black Nurses Association.
