Myndin fjallar um hina tuttugu og tveggja ára gömlu Muriel (Toni Collette). Muriel er atvinnulaus og býr heima hjá foreldrum sínum í smábænum Porpoise Spit ásamt fjórum systkinum sínum og öll fjölskyldan virðist vera hverju öðru vonlausara.
Muriel eyðir dögum sínum inn í herbergi að hlusta á Abba og láta sig dreyma um hjónaband.
