About Okapi:
The avant-folk duo Okapi, based in Asheville, NC, features Scott Mitchell Gorski (harmonium, voice) and Lindsey Paige Miller (cello). Typically an upright bass/cello group, they’ve recently taken an alternative compositional approach that explores traditional murder ballad themes and other folk elements through personal interpretation and contemporary lenses.
As an ode to Southern Appalachia, this body of work honors an independent study of sacred songwriting and balladry from their own unique perspective. Ranging from poetry with atonal noise to lullabies and ominous chants, each piece tells a distinctive story—depicting humanity's complex, corrupt, and unavoidably tethered relationship to nature.
As a whole, this collection of songs encapsulates man’s harmful ignorance and exploitation of natural resources, fueled by speciesist tendencies and a general disrespect toward the overarching, governing power of the divine feminine—which inevitably leads to man’s unmerciful demise.
