About this Event
Join Mayor Ras J. Baraka and the City of Newark Division of Arts and Cultural Affairs on Saturday, February 28, at 10:00 a.m. to celebrate a new mural by artist Danielle Scott, The Elders Spoke and We Bloomed. The program will include remarks and music, and a light breakfast will be served.
Located at Catholic Charities, 321 Central Avenue, the work spans nearly 250 feet and celebrates the legacy, leadership, and resilience of Black men in Newark’s history. The mural was commissioned by The City’s Division of Arts and Cultural Affairs, led by the Director fayemi shakur and Public Art Coordinator Rebecca Pauline Jampol of Project for Empty Space.
“I don’t think anyone can stare into the faces of the people in this mural and not be moved by the strength, conviction, dreams and determination you find there,” said Mayor Baraka. “The spirit of Newarkers is so palpable you forget you are looking at a wall – and you find yourself embracing people whose lives also defy every wall they’ve come up against. I’m grateful to the artist, photographers and everyone involved for illustrating so vividly that in Newark, all possibilities can take root and blossom.”
