K. Dalton Barrett

Kevin Barrett, aka K. Dalton Barrett, has been writing since he knew what words were. Sixty-odd years later, he has published his first novel, The Shrouded Gentleman. He also has a short story in the NH-based anthology, Live Free or Ride!, and pieces in anthologies from Concord Writers Night Out in 2018 and 2019. His play, Targets was produced by the Community Players of Concord and won the 2003 NH Theatre Award for Best Original Play.

The Shrouded Gentleman

It was a simple choice: The stranger or the hangman. On the eve of "Dr." William Johnson’s execution, a rough, mysterious man comes to Newgate Pr*son demanding his release. The stranger calls himself Detective Coombs. He claims Johnson is his assistant and helped him solve a M**der case. Even though they’ve never met, Johnson chooses the lie over the rope.

Egged on by the voice of his long-dead twin brother, Johnson throws his lot in with Coombs, a man who sees solutions to murders that no one else can - solutions that fly in the face of observed reality but turn out to be true. During an investigation at a vicarage deep in the moors, a confrontation goes violently wrong, leaving Johnson clinging to life and with one final choice, this one offered by the voice that may not be his dead brother after all.

The Shrouded Gentleman is a M**der mystery novel set primarily in London in 1884, filled with dark humor, bloody murders, and supernatural forces.

Joshua Bresslin

Josh Bresslin is the author of Crease. A native of New England, he holds a graduate degree from the Mountainview MFA program, and earned a masters in diplomacy from Norwich University. His next novel, Going Over, comes out this summer.

Crease

Amy “Angie” Nelson was ten when she was rescued from the famed “Dyna Girl Kidnapping.” In the final days of her kidnapping, Amy’s father, Louis, discovered her whereabouts, but was killed by her abductor— her own mother, Cassandra.

Eighteen years later, Cassandra sits in Pr*son, and damaged Amy lives a hermetic life, shunning relationships with everyone but those closest to her—her maternal grandfather and her therapist.

Wanda Greene is an attorney working on Cassandra’s behalf. When she locates Amy and notifies her of Cassandra’s upcoming parole hearing, she hopes that Amy will speak on her mother’s behalf and secure her release. Doubtful of mother’s purported “rehabilitation,” Amy reluctantly agrees to reconnect with Cassandra and make her own determination… and maybe reexamine the reasons for her abduction.

As Amy is pressured to decide her mother’s fate, the narrative flashes back to the summer of 1999. The last months of Amy’s kidnapping are relayed through the eyes of young Amy, a homeless child sheltered from the world by her mother’s imaginative lies.

Little by little, painful revelations emerge, and Amy must once again ask herself, “Who is my mother?”

Ian M. Rogers

Ian M. Rogers grew up in New Hampshire before studying literature at Bennington College in Vermont and creative writing at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, where he learned to write short bios like this one. He's worked as a copy editor, a greenhouse assistant, a school secretary, a grocery clerk, an online test-grader, a housepainter, a gardener, and a teacher of English in Japan. His second novel, Carcrash Parker and the Haven of Larpers, is forthcoming from Vine Leaves Press in July.

As he fights off academic conformity and obsessive football fans, Flip faces the challenge of writing a novel that’ll not only satisfy his artistic passions, but might even get him a better job.
