I'm writing to share my journey with cholangiocarcinoma, a rare form of bile duct cancer that metastasized to my liver. My diagnosis in June 2022 initiated a whirlwind of medical interventions. The following six months were a blur of chemotherapy, CT scans, PET scans, MRIs, and biopsies – all aimed at shrinking the tumor to prepare for surgery.
In January 2023, I underwent a left hepatic lobectomy (removal of the left lobe of my liver). While initially discharged after two weeks, a complication necessitated a second operation and another two weeks in hospital. Following this, I was declared cancer-free, a moment of immense relief that, sadly, proved short-lived.
By July 2023, the cancer had returned. Another intensive chemotherapy regimen followed, culminating in an emergency hospital admission. While stabilized, the fight was far from over.
For the next year, I participated in a clinical trial, utilizing a novel oral treatment targeted at a specific mutation. This offered a period of relative stability, but in November 2024, the jaundice symptoms signaled the cancer's unwelcome reappearance.
Currently, I'm undergoing yet another round of chemotherapy, combined with targeted radioactive treatment delivered directly to the liver. It is our fervent hope that this aggressive approach will finally eradicate this disease.
This journey has been profoundly challenging, both physically and emotionally. However, the unwavering support of my loved ones, my medical team, and my own determination fuel my ongoing battle. I am incredibly grateful for the progress made in cancer treatment and remain optimistic about the future.
