Filmmaker, painter, musician — the “art life” of the late, great David Lynch encompassed a vast array of achievements across the last half-century. Born in Missoula, Montana, this seemingly all-American Eagle Scout built a body of work that defies convention, blending the surreal with the everyday while exposing the darkness lurking beneath Norman Rockwell’s idyllic Americana. Ranked #8 on Sight & Sound’s 2022 Greatest Films poll, his 2001 masterpiece Mulholland Dr. both encapsulates his signature obsessions and pushes his vision into uncharted territory. Part neo-noir, part showbiz drama, and part dream (or nightmare?), Mulholland Dr. remains one of modern cinema’s most compulsively watchable, maddening, and endlessly fascinating enigmas. This seminar traces the evolution of Lynch’s idiosyncratic vision and style on his way to becoming one of the most influential and beloved filmmakers of his generation, culminating in a post-screening discussion of Mulholland Dr.Dan Santelli (he/him) is a Philadelphia-based arts administrator, film programmer, and writer. His background includes an internship at the Bryn Mawr Film Institute, serving as Repertory Film Programmer for the late, great Elks Theatre in Middletown, PA, and managing the film program at Civic Theatre of Allentown. He was also a key figure at the venerated video rental store Viva Video (Ardmore, PA) and recently earned an MS in Arts Administration from Drexel University, where he wrote a thesis on the history of repertory film curation and its methodologies. Having seen over 8,000 films, he is dedicated to strengthening the audience’s connection to cinema in all its sundry forms — from the populist and accessible to the recondite and esoteric. He loves cats.
