Muertito are a Leeds-based quintet who incorporate elements of flamenco, folk, classical Indian and Afro-Latin grooves. Comprised of calabash, trumpet, vocals, classical guitar and fretless bass, the group create a rich sonic tapestry that crosses boundaries and transports audiences on a journey across continents. In the last couple of years, they've built up a loyal following locally playing shows across the city at Sela Bar, Hifi Club, Insert Studios, Domino Club, All Hallows Church, Hyde Park Book Club as well as shows further afield in Bristol, Pontefract and at Shambala Festival.
Their line-up is full of well known Leeds jazz/world music/folk scene musicians :
Matías Reed - acoustic classical guitar
Luke Reddin-Williams - calabash/percussion
Sam Dutton Taylor - fretless bass
Georgie Buchanan - vocals
Felix Burling - trumpet
Matías Reed has toured extensively around festivals and venues throughout UK and Europe including WOMAD, New Morning (Paris), Paradiso (Amsterdam), and headline slots at Shambala and Secret Garden Party, Jazz Cafe and for BBC Radio 4. His time spent writing and playing for K.O.G & The Zongo Brigade and founding Vipertime has enabled meaningful relationships to blossom between him and promoters and venue owners around UK and Europe. He's performed live on BBC Radio 4, national television and when headlining festivals around UK and Europe, played to crowds upwards of 3000 people. He has performed live streams with his project Vipertime to online audiences alongside numerous live sessions with Mansion of Snakes, K.O.G & The Zongo Brigade, Vipertime and Franz Von. He has received positive reviews in publications such as Songlines for the albums Wahala Wahala (K.O.G), Shakedown (Vipertime) and M.O.S, which he helped write and record.
Luke Reddin-Williams has toured throughout Sudan and South Korea for the British Council with Mercury Prize/MOBO awards nominated Roller Trio (playing drums), as well as throughout China and India for tours with World Service Project. He has performed shows and festivals in Europe including France, Holland, Germany, Austria, Spain, Italy, Croatia, Turkey. He has played on national television, Channel 4 and has been favourably reviewed in multiple large newspapers such as The Guardian and the Daily Telegraph. At Love Supreme Jazz Festival, Canary Wharf Jazz Festival and Cheltenham Jazz Festival, he played to crowds upwards of 3000 people.
Sam Dutton-Taylor has performed at WOMAD UK, Tuscia Jazz Festival and Earth Garden Festival in Malta. He was a featured artist and competition winner with Aeroplanes at Brescia. An original member of Leeds pioneering afrofusion band Mansion Of Snakes, he helped to co-produce their debut album and is current bass player with award winning afrojazz group Ubunye.
Georgie Buchanan is a much respected folk singer/artist and harpist. She has performed on the main stage of Sidmouth Folk Festival and throughout Yorkshire with folk duo Georgie and Phoebe. In 2023, Georgie was selected for the English Folk Expo Artist Mentoring Scheme and she will perform at Cambridge Folk Festival, FOCUS Wales and at the English Folk Expo Showcase at Manchester Folk Festival this year. Throughout recent years Georgie Buchanan has developed a loyal fan base amongst the folk audience. When she announced her debut album Go Fund Me campaign she raised over £2000 in less than a week. Last year she was selected to be part of the Nest Collective’s Singing with Nightingales online stream which was listened to by an audience of thousands. She is also a member of Leeds spiritual jazz ensemble the Ancient Infinity Orchestra, who are signed to Matthew Halsall's Gondwana Records.
Felix Burling is one of Leeds' top young jazz trumpeters. He broke through originally a few years ago with much loved jazz/grime outfit Project Hilts whilst still a student at Leeds Conservatoire. Since then, he's become a full time member of bass player Fergus Quill's 25 piece cosmic jazz ensemble Ferg's Imaginary Big Band, nujazz fusion kings Tetes De Pois, house/drum & bass club classics big band Shades Collective and the band of UK afrofusion master vocalist K.O.G (Kweku Of Ghana).
Muertito's debut album is out in October 2024 and this is the hometown launch party for it.
Support comes from a new band of recent Leeds Conservatoire graduate musicians. Dylan Sluiter and Pedraum Agahi present their newly formed folk ensemble, combining fellow Leeds Conservatoire jazz musicians with traditional Iranian instrumentalists based in Manchester. Aiming to bridge cultural divides, the ensemble performs a mix of iconic folk songs from across the Middle East, along with original compositions and arrangements inspired by both Eastern and Western influences. Still early days for this line-up but they're already making some wonderful global jazz fusion. Get down early and catch them live.
Doors 7.30pm. Dylan Sluiter/Pedraum Agahi Folk Ensemble 8pm. Muertito 9.15pm. Curfew 11pm. This is a jazz club style seated show with tables and chairs. No seat reservations so come down early to grab a seat and table.
