MUCH workshopsDarragh McLoughlin: Performance Mechanics
This research proposes a shift in how we approach performance-making: moving away from prioritising theme, narrative, or technique, and instead focusing on mechanics as the primary generative force in the creation of performance. The term “mechanics” is borrowed from game design - where it refers not to the doing of things, but to the underlying systems and rules that structure how players interact with a game.
Translating this to performance, we could speak of performance mechanics or theatre mechanics as: structures that guide audience interaction and interpretation. These mechanics are not medium-specific: they are applicable across genres and disciplines, from circus and theatre to dance, video, and conceptual art. In this way, the research is not limited to any particular field but investigates a universal creative framework.
In this workshop we look at several examples which use different mechanics. We will then examine and dissect the mechanics we come across and attempt to translate those systems into tools which we can apply to our own work, without copying the work or themes of the original examples.
Participants will be asked to bring whatever props they like to work with, and comfortable clothes to move in. All disciplines are welcome.

April, spring awakening, circus!
Spring is here and so is the third edition of MUCH Circus Festival with Hungarian, regional and international contemporary circus productions indoors and outdoors - produced as a collaboration of OneTwoMany Collective circus company and Trafo House of Contemporary Arts.
