This is a delightful walk through the Mount Thomas forest where we’ll hopefully see pīwakaka, kererū, and korimako.
We’ll meet in the Mount Thomas Wooded Gully Campsite car park for a prompt 10:00 am start. Our leaders for the day are Audrey and Dianne. There is a toilet at the Wooded Gully campground.
We’ll head up the Red Pine Track, which follows the stream through beech forest for about 1 hour 30 minutes until it joins up with the Wooded Gully Track. It is steady uphill but not overly steep. We’ll take a break here before heading down Wooded Gully to Kererū Track, which will reconnect with Red Pine Track back to the carpark.
Please note this track is somewhat challenging because of uneven and potentially slippery footing, including lots of tree roots and rocks for about half of the track and a washed out area with narrow track. There are multiple rocky stream crossings so footwear with good traction is a must and poles are a good idea. Depending on the pace of the group, it should take 2 - 3 hours.
Note: Although DOC and AllTrails say the Wooded Gully Track is closed, only a portion of it is.
We will have coffee and snacks at the Organic Coffee Lab in Cust after the walk.
