Join us at DGriot Cafe in Germantown for an intimate screening of Mr. SOUL!, the documentary about Ellis Haizlip and the groundbreaking television program SOUL!.
Before social media, before Black culture had the kind of visibility we see today, there was SOUL! a television program that created space for Black artists, writers, musicians, thinkers, and queer voices to be seen and heard on their own terms.
Created and hosted by Ellis Haizlip, SOUL! aired on PBS from 1968–1973 and became a rare space where Black creativity, politics, music, literature, culture, and queer expression could exist together without being watered down.
Mr. SOUL! takes us into the world behind the program, exploring Haizlip’s vision and the people who helped bring SOUL! to life.
Following the screening, we’ll gather for an open community conversation about the film, Ellis Haizlip’s legacy, and the ideas and feelings the film brings up for us today.
This is an opportunity to watch, reflect, connect, and spend some time together in community.
