Mounarath Powell Dance presents “Perpetual Motion” at the MP Dance Performance Space (8674 La Mesa Blvd, La Mesa, CA 91942) on October 2-4, 2025 @ 7:30pm.
Join us for a dynamic evening of dance that showcases diverse choreographic voices brought together through powerful movement and emotional depth.
Caley Hernandez’s new contemporary work —Perpetual Motion— serves as the title and thematic anchor of the evening. Hernandez’s new work is a vibrant exploration of momentum, using layered choreography and continuous motion as a force that defines how we exist in relation to the world around us.
The program welcomes renowned guest choreographers Jean Isaacs and Bernard Brown. Isaacs revisits her evocative piece, Liebe, which explores the many dimensions of love and human connection. Brown draws from the iconic words from revolutionary Assata Shakur, this creative process gave birth to questions about liberation and collective power. As we feel our rights are under threat, our community internalized these questions: Where does our collective power lie? When do we begin caring for one another? Who do we count on? How will we care for each other?
Eva Anderson’s Reverie is an ode to community, joy, belief, and togetherness. A shared journey of moving forward. Reverie unfolds through a particular movement language, shaped by choreographer’s studies of Paul Taylor’s technique.
Artistic Director Spencer John Powell debuts a new work called Swinging at the Berthana. This is a tribute to the Berthana, a social and dance hall built in May 1915, and it is still standing and in operation today as the Copper Club.
