David Neely, music directorWolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s last three symphonies were composed in little more than six weeks, and it is widely speculated that he was never able to hear them performed. Many scholars believe that these works were conceived as a sort of trilogy, with the 39th serving as an almost overture to the other two. Despite its relative lack of popularity in comparison to his 40th and 41st symphonies, Mozart’s Symphony No. 39 in E-flat Major is no less impressive. Stately, and at times playful and mischievous, this symphony has many of the hallmarks of his previous works, while continuing to push compositional boundaries in a way that is uniquely Mozart.
This performance will also include Richard Wagner’s Suite from Die Meistersinger and American composer Joan Tower’s Concerto for Flute, featuring 2024 UMSO Concerto Competition winner Lisa Yejin Choi.
