This concert brings together a vibrant and contrasting programme of chamber music performed by the Devon-based Haldon Quintet.
Opening with Mozart’s Duo for Violin and Viola in G major, the audience is welcomed into a world of elegant conversation between the two instruments, full of clarity and charm. This is followed by Judith Weir’s The Bagpipers, a lively and characterful string trio that draws on folk-inspired elements, offering rhythmic energy and a distinctly modern voice. The programme culminates in Schubert’s beloved “Trout” Quintet, a masterpiece of warmth and lyricism, where its famous variations shimmer with melodic beauty and playful interplay.
The music throughout the evening highlights the richness of chamber writing, from classical refinement to contemporary colour, brought to life by Lindsay Braga (violin), Andrew Gillett (viola), Rebecca Allnatt (cello), Michael Allnatt (double bass), and rising young pianist Anton Pigott from Totnes. A former student of Jill Bird and soon to take up a scholarship at the Royal Northern College of Music, Anton returns after his acclaimed performance of the Mendelssohn Piano Concerto with the Haldon Ensemble last year, bringing fresh energy to one of the most celebrated works in the chamber repertoire.
