The declamatory unison motive that opens Mozart’s Piano Quartet in G minor K. 478 establishes the work’s serious and brooding character. Spirits are highest in the Rondo finale, where a cheerful melody in the piano later gives way to shimmering passagework. / The first movement of Coleridge-Taylor’s Clarinet Quintet is an energetic tour de force showcasing the full group. The second movement opens delicately with strings and features a tender, folk-song inspired melody and is followed by a Scherzo with “rhythmic exuberance.” The final movement combines rhythmic intensity with lyrical moments and an exciting finish. / Composed in the wake of his mother’s death, Dvořák’s Piano Trio in F minor is a serious four-movement work combining the composer’s signature lyricism and nationalistic influence. A passionate first movement is followed by a folk-inspired polka, while the third movement Adagio, opening with an expansive cello solo, will strike many listeners as a nod to Brahms.
