Moving as One: A Devising Workshop

This devising theatre workshop will pull from Tectonic Theatre moment work, Theatre of the Oppressed exercises, Liz Lerman movement work, and other applied theatre methods to engage participants in a taste of what devising theatre is all about! To focus our workshop, our topic for our quick devising dive will be the One Health concept. One Health is a collaborative, interdisciplinary approach recognizing that the health of people, animals (domestic and wild), plants, and the shared environment are interconnected and interdependent, requiring global, national, and local cooperation to achieve optimal health for all. The workshop will begin with theatre games to build trust and rapport, before moving into small group work on the development of scenes in response to One Health prompts, and will allow folks to play with various devising methods through grappling with a relevant topic. Bring paper, pen. Mobility accommodations are welcomed, for those that can, come prepared to move!

Michelle Hayford, Ph.D., is Associate Dean University College & Executive Director of Arts NC State. Prior to taking her position at NC State, Dr. Hayford served as Director of the Theatre, Dance, and Performance Technology Program, Associate Professor of Theatre, and Director of the Common Good Players at the University of Dayton. Dr. Hayford holds a Ph.D. in Performance Studies from Northwestern University. Her scholarship advocates for arts integration for all students, and the civic engagement of the arts in community. Dr. Hayford's passion for arts administration leadership prompted her to write Undergraduate Research in Theatre, published by Routledge (2021) and Performing Arts as High-Impact Practice (2018, with Susan Kattwinkel) published by Palgrave MacMillan. She has served the Association for Theatre in Higher Education's Leadership Institute, the Council on Undergraduate Research as elected councilor for Arts and Humanities, the editorial board for the journal SPUR: Scholarship and Practice of Undergraduate Research, and the Kennedy Center Regional Theatre Festival as State Chair. Dr. Hayford is an applied theatre practitioner, theatre director, and performer, who brings storytelling into communities through transformative partnerships--most recently with the Office of Reentry in Montgomery County, to create an original play featuring the stories of formerly incarcerated restored citizen cast members and neuroscience research in Pathways to Connectivity (2024).
