Join Hampton Art Lovers for a special Juneteenth celebration honoring the life, legacy, and enduring influence of Paul Robeson—athlete, artist, scholar, actor, singer, and one of the twentieth century's most powerful voices for justice, freedom, and human dignity.
The evening will feature a special screening of Paul Robeson: Scandalize My Name, a documentary produced by Lucasfilm that chronicles Robeson's extraordinary life and career. The film explores his rise from All-American athlete and internationally acclaimed performer to one of the most outspoken advocates for civil rights and global justice. It also examines the political persecution he endured during the Cold War because of his unwavering commitment to equality and human rights.
Produced as part of the educational documentary series accompanying The Adventures of Young Indiana Jones, the film was written and produced by Karena O'Riordan and executive produced by George Lucas and Rick McCallum. The documentary remains one of the most accessible and compelling introductions to Robeson's life and legacy.
As part of In the Paint: Sports, Art & Culture, the program invites audiences to consider Robeson's unique place at the intersection of athletics, culture, performance, and social change. Through film, art, music, and community dialogue, the evening explores how Robeson's example continues to inspire artists, athletes, and activists around the world.
