A summary of “The Water State” (14 minutes):
It illustrates how Florida’s governmental protections have failed to protect the state’s freshwater springs, which are facing imminent extinction. The aquifer underlying Florida’s springs is the main source of freshwater for the state.
A summary of “Gopher Games” (18 minutes):
As developers squeeze every ounce of profit they can from the Florida landscape, animals like the gopher tortoise and its habitat are being driven to extinction. There’s still time to save this species and ultimately ourselves.
About Brent Fannin:
Although currently residing in Atlanta, Brent spent more than a decade living in Central Florida and has enjoyed countless hours exploring the state’s springs, rivers, and various ecosystems. With a background in environmental education and filmmaking, after moving to Florida he quickly dove into springs conservation and founded water conservation organization Keepers of the Springs. He released documentaries The Water State in 2022 and Gopher Games in 2024, in the hopes of making a difference in the way Floridians and others view conserving their state’s springs, wildlife, and wild places.
About Chase Pirtle:
Chase began his animal career at a young age volunteering at the Moonridge Animal Park in Big Bear, California. Since then, Chase has worked at a wolf sanctuary in Colorado, attended a Forestry and Wildlife Ecology program in South Carolina, and graduated from the Santa Fe College Teaching Zoo in Gainesville Florida. After finishing college, Chase went on to co-found The Rattlesnake Conservancy, and worked as the assistant curator at the Santa Fe College Teaching Zoo. Chase has his Florida VRC venomous license and his authorized gopher tortoise agent permit. He is currently the Animal Care Specialist and Habitat Manager at the Ashton Biological Preserve, where he has worked since 2013
