A young man travels to a desolate castle and unleashes an ancient pestilence in human form: Count Orlok. This rat-like phantom, with his taloned fingers and soulless eyes, becomes obsessed with the man's innocent wife. He sails to their town on a ghost ship, bringing with him coffins of cursed earth and a swarm of plague-carrying rats. As a creeping shadow, he drains the life from the city, a walking nightmare whose only desire is to feed upon the pure, warm blood he has crossed the sea to claim.
