About this Event
THE ETHOS
Textiles and craft – both as making practices and as sources of inspiration – can be powerful tools for tapping into the intuition, creativity, collaboration, and agency we need to move through stuckness.
THE EVENT
Enlivening Goldsmiths’ rich textile collection, this workshop is an intuitive exploration of textiles through guided creative writing and movement. Inspired by the spiritual agency that textiles have represented in cultures around the world – from the Egyptian goddess Net who weaves the world on her loom, to the Greek Fates – participants will learn about the lost significance of textiles, hear from craftswomen (via film) about the power of weaving in their personal lives, and be guided through prompts to weave through obstacles in their own lives.
PLEASE BRING
A notebook or journal, or laptop if you prefer. Pencils are the only writing utensils allowed in the archive to protect the textiles from ink, and can be provided on-site if you cannot bring one.
Wear clothing you're comfortable doing light movement in; the workshop will include a movement component.
LOCATION
The entrance to Deptford Town Hall is on New Cross Road, between St. James' and Laurie Grove. The gallery is located on the lower ground floor.
The building is not step-free, but accessibility arrangements can be made with advanced notice. Please email [email protected] to make arrangements.
Please note the gallery is a pencil-only environment (pencils can be provided on-site). Food and drinks are also prohibited. To preserve the textile collection, please use the restroom to wash and dry hands thoroughly before handling textiles.
TICKETS
This event has a limited capacity of 10 participants.
The event is ticketed on a sliding scale.
Profits will be donated to Empower, a UK charity that supports girls & young women who have lost their mothers.
