This course aims to equip those who support system-involved youth and families with the knowledge and skills of Motivational Interviewing (MI) and its application in the context of the Stages of Change. Participants will learn how to effectively engage, support, and empower system-involved youth and families at different stages of change, especially within the process of identifying strengths and needs and well as service and support planning efforts. Through interactive exercises, case studies, and role-plays, participants will enhance their ability to apply MI techniques and facilitate positive behavior change in this unique population. The material will be delivered by PowerPoint presentation, short video clips, group discussion, breakout (small group) discussions and participant workbook (handout).
Trainees can practice with others who support system-involved youth identifying stages of change within the Transtheoretical Model (TTM) and discuss potential applications.
Trainees can use at least one skill to engage and build rapport with pre-contemplative system-involved individuals, using MI techniques such as reflective listening and developing discrepancy.
1.) Identify at least two motivational interviewing (MI) techniques to engage and build rapport with pre-contemplative system-involved youth and families. 2.) Identify at least one skill to support system-involved youth and families in the action stage by reinforcing progress, addressing setbacks, and promoting self-efficacy. 3.) Acquire at least one skill to elicit and amplify change talk while working with contemplative system-involved youth and families, using MI techniques such as exploring pros and cons and supporting self-efficacy. 4.) Develop at least one tool for incorporating the use of MI into their daily work with system-involved youth.
