A passionate, playful, unflinching portrayal of the first — and most enduring — bond of our lives. Mother’s Day is both a memoir of one mother, and an homage to ALL mothers. A clear-eyed look at the richness of motherhood – from the blissful embraces to the scrapes and skirmishes.
The playwright shares her journey as she tries to fully “see” her mother.
“Mothers are God-like. They create us. But they also create a world – and place us in the center of that world.”
Sadly, she discovers that the desire to see her mother can only be fulfilled after death.
“My mother was too bright, too intense to see – her light drained the color from her surroundings. No – she could only be seen at dusk. In the twilight of old age and dementia.”
Veering from sentimental to skeptical, from harrowing to hilarious, Mother’s Day celebrates the women who made us. It is especially dedicated to those mothers who are no longer with us, except in our memories and our dreams.
