Mosquitoes are some of the deadliest animals in the world, but not all mosquitoes are serious public health concerns. There are about 3,500 species described worldwide but only a few species are responsible for human mosquito-borne diseases.
In California, there are 53 described species and can be found from coastal saltwater marshes to the Sierra Nevada.
In this class Natalie Castillo will describe biological adaptations unique to mosquitoes, mosquito diversity and ecology in California, and what mosquitoes are found in San Diego.
Learning about their ecology can bring awareness of what habitats promote mosquito abundance around us. We will also briefly learn how to use an identification key to identify local mosquitoes species.
