About this Event
May is Lower East Side History Month!
MoRUS will be screening films about taking over abandoned buildings, fixing them up, and turning them into communal housing in the Lower East Side.
May 14th Screenings: Takeover, Whose Neighborhood is it Anyway?
Takeover [1990] - Directed by Peter Kinoy and Pamela Yates. An hourlong documentary about homeless people who organized to simultaneously seize and take over empty buildings in eight U.S. cities on May Day 1990. The film has footage from groups organizing in Philadelphia, Minneapolis, and New York. In New York, the focus was on a group called Tent City who was based in Tompkins Square Park. During a planned May Day riot acting as a diversion, Tent City opened several buildings in the neighborhood, including P.E.S.T. and Fetus House, both of which remained open until 1992.
Whose Neighborhood is it Anyway? [late 90's] Directed by Pedro Carvajal. Twenty minute film shot in the mid to the late 90's, soon after five of the 13th Street squats were evicted after a contentious standoff with the NYPD and one of their armored personnel carriers.

More about Lower East Side History Month
Lower East Side History Month is an annual celebration of the stories and peoples of the LES. This year, over 60 organizations -- including museums, arts nonprofits, community centers, small businesses, and gardens, will host learning opportunities, tours, performances, and public events!
The LES and Chinatown have deep histories as sites of refuge, community, and mutual aid -- places created by immigrants for immigrants.
At a time when immigrant communities are being targeted and villainized, we encourage everyone this May to celebrate and honor the extraordinary contributions immigrants from all parts of the world have made to the rich, diverse history of our neighborhood.
