About this Event

Rub elbows with the Vancouver Morris Men as they present a lively introduction to English folk customs, past and present. Come enjoy an active evening of traditional English music and dance, learn about Morris history, and spend some spirited social time in the lantern-lit environs of Secret Headquarters!

In their own words: “We are dancers of the Morris, a form of English ceremonial and ritual folk dance based on rhythmic stepping and the execution of choreographed figures. These dances are quite different from “social” dances (which are essentially an interaction between the genders for personal pleasure).  Indeed, the Morris dances typically involve the waving of handkerchiefs, the clashing of sticks, or the handling of antlers, and were originally performed to celebrate the changing seasons and ancient holidays. We supplement these unique dances with other associated English folk customs such as seasonal mummer’s plays and folk songs.”

This stimulating event is guaranteed to enliven, intrigue and illuminate, so come prepared to learn some history, enjoy live music, try a few dances, and make new friends!

Facilitator Bio

were formed in 1982 (and incorporated as a non-profit society in1989) to maintain English folk traditions, specifically the Morris, locally.   We perform traditional dances from the South Midlands (Cotswold Morris), the Welsh Borders, East Anglia (Molly) and Abbots Bromley, Staffordshire (Horn Dance).  We have performed throughout the Lower Mainland, the Okanagan, Gulf Islands, the USA, and England.

Graham Baldwin is the founder of the VMM and has performed the Morris since 1976.  He introduced and taught most of the performance styles in our repertoire.

Steve Cleary joined the VMM in 1983 and has performed the Morris since 1969.  He has been an instructor and director for most of the VMM’s history, and leads many of our seasonal folk songs.

Steve Crowley joined the VMM in 2000.  His keen interest in folk ritual has resulted in his leadership of the VMM’s horn dance and mumming plays.
