About this Event
We invite you to come and join us for a beautiful evening at the Birch Community Centre to bring you the magic of Gnawa music.
- What is Gnawa Music?
Gnawa music originates from the Gnawa ethnic group of Sub Saharan African slaves who were brought to Morocco, beginning in the 11th Century. Gnawa music in Morocco is much more than a musical genre hence why it's defined as a trance music. It is a spiritual music at its roots and is a traditional practice throughout Morocco. The beats are repetitive yet lively.
The delightful and auspicious musical sound is also choreographed with gyrating dances. In the act the music and dance are experienced as purifying liberation, a higher state of consciousness and deeply healing. In its highest expressions the rituals of this music and dance can take you on a magical and mystical cosmic journey.
Central to the Gnawa sounds is the Gimbri ( a large accoustic 3 stringed bass - a guitar drum with a wooden body alongside the Karkaba (Krakebs) also known as the castanets, a handheld cymbal-type instrument handmade from iron or steel.
