THE BRITISH EMPIRE – WHAT IS THE LEGACY?
The legacy of The British Empire has never been as contentious in the eyes of the United Kingdom - and elsewhere.
Whilst schoolchildren 50 ago were told the stories of Drake, Cook, Clive of India, Nelson, Darwin, Livingstone and others in a positive and, often in a jingoistic light, the debate now is much less on the positive side. Is that fair?
The session will consider aspects of the legacy of Empire, including:
· Infrastructure Development
· Spread of Education and Language
· Cultural Exchange
· Exploitation and Injustice
· Cultural Imperialism
· Economics
· Social Divisions and Conflict.
The session will be facilitated by Lit & Phil Member John Duns
