After years of applying and patiently waiting, you’ve finally won the coveted Maine moose hunting permit! Or, maybe you are looking to simply gain more skills and knowledge as you continue to apply. This could be a once in a lifetime hunt, and receiving the tag is just the beginning. It takes a great deal of planning, preparations, equipment, and practice to be 100% prepared to make this “hunt of a lifetime” successful and remember- success is measured in the full experience, not simply harvesting a moose, which, if you’re lucky, you just might. The satisfaction and memories made while hunting moose is the real reward.
Topics covered in Workshop:
- Planning a moose hunt: location, lodging, gear, logistics
- Understanding the zones (WMU's), including public, private lands, and NMW access.
- Moose habits and habitats: feeding, scouting, sign, behavior
- Seasonal shifts in activity
- Proven hunting tactics: tips, calling techniques, use of scent, raking, etc.
- Learning the different calling methods and how/when to apply them.
- Shot placement for an ethical harvest.
- Field Dressing, big game removal: How to get a moose out of the woods and cooled
- Quartering or intact removal; use of backframes, winches, tackle and gear
- Meat care and processing
- Vehicle prep
- Maine moose hunting laws and regulations.
- Hunting Safely, ethically, and lawfully.
We will provide all attendees with follow up resources such as lists that can be helpful for planning purposes, links to additional content, and more information that will help you to be fully prepared for the hunt of a lifetime.
