“Jack Cates, The Norfolk Wherrymen”The story of the last professional Wherryman.
I am a social historian and completed a History degree at UEA between 2012 and 2017.
I was born in Norwich, and I have been involved in 5 publications, many written articles, many organised walks, and talks and I am a committee member of Thorpe History Group. I do a varied list of presentations which cover such varied subjects such as an English Knight, Sir John Fastolf to the asylum hospital at Thorpe St Andrew.
Jack Cates was born in Norwich in the early 1900s in a family where both his father and grandfather were wherrymen. He would go on to serve in WW2 on Gold Beach on Dday. When the wherry the Albion was restored in 1949, he was appointed the skipper of the Albion for the next three years.
Jack was a successful skipper and spent most of his working life on the rivers between Norwich and Yarmouth. Through family connections I am able to piece together his life in the harsh world of wherries and life on the water in the early 1900s.
Dale's talk will last about an hour in total, 45 minutes for the talk, followed by questions and discussion in the last 15 minutes.
Refreshments will be served, now at £2 a head for a hot drink and biscuits.
Attendance is free to members (please remember your membership cards), non-members will be asked to pay £3.50.
We would like everyone to be in their seats by 2pm at the latest to minimise interruptions.
Sorry, no dogs allowed.
