Self-care is a buzz word these days that often gets used to describe things like getting a massage, or going to the gym, or getting your nails done… These things certainly count as taking care of yourself however, self-care also includes self-reflection, taking responsibility for your emotional mental fiscal and spiritual well-being, and actively participating in improving your connection to yourself.
Caring for yourself is the act of self-love that pushes you ever closer to living the life you want, and being your highest and most authentic self every damn day. It’s the things you do- the actions you choose to take - to tend to, nurture and express your deepest truth.
I know what you may be thinking “Yeah, but how in the world do I do that?!?”
The Monthly Self-care Reset is an answer to that question. In this intimate monthly connection we can all reset our self-care practices. Each month we will explore a different self-care content topic, and practice a different self-care ritual. Whether you’re just beginning your personal development journey, or looking for ways to bring inspiration to tried and true rituals - this event aims to provide deep connection, conversation, exposure and practice to the different ways we can practice caring for ourselves.
This is a co-ed event, all are welcome.
The format:
We will meet monthly for 2.5 hours
630-715pm facilitated content on self care topics (schedule of topics and possible speakers below)
715-815pm A self-care practice (schedule below)
815-9pm Q&A, Resources and Socializing
October’s Self-Care Reset topic - Body Awareness and Food
These vessels that carry us through this lived experience are brilliant and beautiful and they always remember what the brain forgets. As we work to nurture the connection to our bodies most of us will find there is an abundance of miseducation and or ignorance to how the body functions, what optimal performance is, and how to interpret the messages you do receive from the body about what it needs.
Our Self-Care Reset Topic this month is about Body Awareness and Food.
Body awareness is how conscious you are to your own body. This is both the felt sense - the sensations in the body that deliver messages about the body’s needs - and how you interpret these messages.
All of us know the sensations of:
- Not being able to sleep
- Sleeping too much
- Inability to focus and concentrate
- Fatigue
- Fluctuating weight-loss/gain
- Food cravings specifically around sugar and carbs
- Holding our breath
- Getting headaches on cue at a specific time
- Anxiety
- Bloating and inflammatory response
Now, what if I told you that craving for an ice cream sundae does not mean your body actually needs an ice cream sundae but rather it is asking for vital vitamins and nutrients, that it knows it gets from the current diet you are feeding it?
Or that those daily headaches you get at 3pm are not a reminder to take more Tylenol or drink more caffeine - but rather your body letting you know you have overstimulated the adrenals with your caffeine intake already. You need water - lots of it, and probably a good stretch.
These are just two examples of some common ways we misinterpret the body’s requests but with significant consequences when you spread it out over time.
This month we will work to increase our overall body awareness through body scan, and The GoGetEmCoach Emily Murphy will join us to go over the common misinterpretations of our bodily sensations and help us open up to healthier and holistic responses.
