This event will be a film produced by u3a member Roger Webber, โA Submarine lost in the pastโ. The film depicts how research by MichaelPearn identified the position of The Royal Navyโs first submarine, the Holland 1, which had sunk in 50 metres of water near the Eddystone lighthouse in 1913. As a result of the interest surrounding this, Holland 1 was raised from the seabed by the Royal Navy Submarine Museum and taken to Devonport Dockyard in 1982. There a young Roger Webber filmed the cleaning and preservation work. Those u3a members connected with the Dockyard will try to spot themselves in the film.Included is an interview with Roger Osborne, the chief engineer
explaining about dockyard work practice.
Michael Pearn will be attending the premier of this film on the 14 th October. As the film is too long for a Q and A session Michael will be glad to talk to members in the Lounge after the film. Roger will join in after he has put the Audio Visual equipment away.
Please take note that this film is one hour long and in order that there is some time after the film for questions, the film will start at 10.40a.m. on the 14 th October. It has subtitles for the hard of hearing. It would be helpful for people to take their seats by 10.20a.m.
