Welcome to the Month of Mayhem: 30-Day Filmmaking Competition - REGISTRATION event! Get ready to showcase your creativity and filmmaking skills in this exciting competition!

Registration occurs the entire month of August. Your team will then have the entire month of September to complete your short horror film. The screening and awards event will take place In Oct in Columbus, OH!
Month of Mayhem is a twisted short filmmaking competition where teams have one month to write, shoot, and edit a horror film. Each Team will select a MAYHEM GENRE, and randomly assigned a unique MAYHEM PROP and MAYHEM GENRE. Each Team will have 30 days to put together a short film. It's a ruthless race against time, pushing their creativity and sanity to the brink. Let the nightmare begin!

This in-person event is the perfect opportunity to connect with fellow filmmakers, learn new techniques, and bring your vision to life on the big screen. General Info:

• Film it on an iPhone with a couple flashlights, or film it on a professional camera with all kinds of lights and audio; we don’t care!
• All films must be in English, or have on-screen English subtitles.

Rating/Content restrictions:

• PG-13 with the language. You’re allowed one “F” bomb - make it count! You’ll be judged on it!
• No nudity or excessive sexual content.
• Nothing that promotes any sort of racism, bigotry, homophobia, hatred, etc., will be accepted.
• No use of copyrighted music; must be public domain music, music you created, or music you were given permission to use. Music source(s) must be listed in credits.
• Teams can be any size.
• People can work in multiple teams.
• Each film must be its own standalone film. Multiple teams cannot work together to submit different parts of the same story / film.
• Credits must include everyone who worked on or helped with the film.

Duration: To qualify for awards, including the Mayhem Award, your films must have a total length between 7 and 13 minutes, inclusive of the opening title card and credits. Any film that breaks these rules will not be eligible for the Mayhem Award. While films not meeting the length criteria will still be screened, they will not qualify for any awards.

Entry Fee Refunds

If you change your mind, and don’t want to compete for any reason after the registration fee is paid, just let us know! Entry Fee refunds will be allowed until 8/30/24, less a 50% service fee.

MAYHEM GENRES

MAYHEM GENRES are selected by the team captain from a list of 30 options during registration. Choose wisely!

MAYHEM PROPS

A random MAYHEM PROP will be randomly assigned to each team at KICK OFF, and must be used in the film. A character has to either touch, hold, or acknowledge the prop in some way; it cannot just be set dressing. It does not have to be an integral part of the film; a couple seconds is fine.

MAYHEM PHRASE:

A random MAYHEM PHRASE will be randomly assigned to each Team at KICK OFF, and must be used in the film. Your Team’s MAYHEM PHRASE must be said by one or more of the characters in the film.

• Every team will then be randomly assigned the same MAYHEM PHRASE and MAYHEM PROP. All MAYHEM items must be used within the film submission, or risk being disqualified from award nominations.

100 different unique Mayhem Phrases will be randomly assigned to each team upon registration

MAYHEM FILM DROP-OFF EVENT

The films will be submitted- can be in-person or online.

• In-Person @ Phoenix Theater (2 large popcorn$)
• Online (Submit to [email protected])
• Turn-in will ANY TIME during the month of September, OR on 9/30/24 from 6:00pm until 8:00 pm.
• Turn in will be an unlisted, functioning YouTube link sent to [email protected]
• Any Late Submission turned in after 10:00 pm on 9/30/24 may not be eligible for awards, or Month of Mayhem ‘24 Screening Event.

Submitting Process:

• Films must be posted to YouTube, with a private link sent by the deadline. Films will be posted to this page throughout October. Films with the most likes will win the Audience Award.
• Early Submissions are allowed.
• Each film must begin with Mayhem Title Card.

Mayhem Title Card:

MUST BE INCLUDED ON EVERY FILM SUBMITTED

• Minimum of 5 seconds
• Must include:

1. Film Title

5. Mayhem Team Name
6. “Made for Month of Mayhem 2024”

Recommended Tech Specs:Below is a list of standard tech specs for ensuring basic quality control for festival screening. It is the responsibility of the team captain to follow recommended tech specs.

1. Video Resolution: Minimum 1920 x 1080 pixels (Full HD); Maxiumum 3840 x 2160 pixels (4K)
2. Frame Rate: 30 fps (consistent throughout the film)

   • Minimum bit rate: 192 kbps; Preferred 320 kbps
   • Sample rate: 48 kHz
5. File Format:
6. • Preferred: MP4 or MOV
   • Codec: H.264 for video, AAC for audio
7. Aspect Ratio: Common ratios: 16:9 or 2.39:1 (consistent throughout the film)
8. Bit Rate: Minimum 10 Mbps
9. Color Space: Rec. 709 (standard for HD video)
10. File Naming: Clear and specific naming convention (e.g., FilmTitle_TeamName.mp4)

By adhering to these tech specs, submitting teams can ensure their films meet basic quality control standards for Month of Mayhem Screening Event.

MAYHEM AWARDS

All Mayhem Awards will be dedicated to Team Name. Mayhem Award Winners will be identified immediately following the Mayhem Screening Event at the Phoenix 24 Theater in Columbus, OH on Sat 10/19/24.
