About this Event
The interactive walking tours are led by knowledgeable guides that will share fascinating facts about historical assets and key figures that helped make Cleveland a special place. You'll learn about architecture, cultural and neighborhood development, historic preservation, and Cleveland's role in American history. Along the way, you'll meet important figures from Cleveland’s past, portrayed by actors and actresses, who will share their stories with you.
The Monroe Street Cemetery Tour meets at the Cemetery Gatehouse entrance. Please arrive 15 minutes early as the tour starts promptly.
About the Tour: Step into the past at one of Cleveland’s oldest burial grounds, where the stories of everyday people helped shape the city we know today. Established in 1836, Monroe Street Cemetery is the final resting place of early settlers, laborers, immigrants, and visionaries whose hard work and perseverance laid the foundation for Ohio City and Cleveland’s growth.
As you explore the grounds, you’ll notice a rich mosaic of cultural backgrounds—most notably English, Irish, Belgian, and German—alongside families of Hungarian, Dutch, Scottish, and other heritages. Designated a Historic Landmark by the City of Cleveland Landmarks Commission in 1973, Monroe Street Cemetery is a journey through history, heritage, and the quiet legacy of a hardworking community.
Character you may meet along the tour: Sophia Lord Barber or Madgalena Baehr
RESERVATIONS are requested but not required, walk-ups the day of tour are welcomed.
