Ernest Melton is one of Kansas City's rising voices on the saxophone. A gospel-influenced musician from North Carolina, Melton moved to Kansas City to immerse himself in the local jazz scene and quickly established himself as a serious composer and bandleader.
His 2018 album The Time of the Slave Is Over introduced complex, searching compositions inspired by John Coltrane and Miles Davis. Melton's music is about more than technical mastery; it is about communication and pushing boundaries. His performances pair aggressive energy and sophisticated harmony with a deep commitment to honoring the tradition while moving it forward.
Melton opens the night with the featured set, then the bandstand opens to the room. Bring your horn, your voice, or just your ears — the Monday Night Jam is where Kansas City's players come to stretch out and where the next great moment can start with an unplanned chorus.
Cover is $10 for the general public; AJM members, musicians, and students are free. Sign up at the door to sit in.
