MON PM - Portrait Drawing with Wendy Kwasny

Improve your ability to capture a subject’s likeness, learn expressive drawing techniques, and expand on your style of rendering!

Learn the fundamentals of creating a realistic portrait using reference photos, mirrors and your imagination. Explore a variety of techniques to arrive at the goal of an expressive portrait.

In this class, you'll learn how to:

• Select a reference photo that will provide the best results
• Draw the structure of a face
• Graph a resource photo to accurately represent a desired image
• Use negative and positive space to recognize shape and dimension
• Use light and shadow to create form
• We will have fun practicing different drawing techniques to bring about a likeness of an individual.

Each student will walk away with at least one finished portrait by the end of the class and have established drawing techniques that will help them to confidently create portraits on their own.

Great for beginning and intermediate level artists.

Supply List:

• Reference photo, either printed on on iPad; we’ll discuss this in class. You don’t need it for the first class.
• Pencil Set of 6: either 2H-6B or HB-8B sets
• General's Charcoal Drawing Assortment (or variety of Soft/Med Compressed and Vine Charcoals)
• 1 Eraser: (e.g., General’s Large Kneaded)
• 1 Portable Pencil Sharpener
• 1 9x12 Sketchbook (e.g., Canson XL Mixed Media Spiral-Bound)
• 1 18x24 Drawing Pad (e.g., Strathmore Sketch Spiral Bound)
• Large pad of newsprint paper
• plus any drawing materials you already have at home!
