"Everybody's son is good. But my son he actually was a good boy. I don't know anything right now, All I know is my son Tyre is not here with me anymore." -- RowVaughn Wells, Jan 23, 2023
This is an invitation to come out to next week's City Council meeting to signal our community's outrage at the senseless, violent death of Tyree Nichols and pressure OUR city council to use their power to create systemic change in the broken policing system in OUR city. We need to let our elected officials know that we expect them to do everything they can to prevent this from happening again.
To be clear: This invitation is NOT limited to moms! Anyone and everyone is welcome and should come down to City Hall and this invite is not meant to be exclusionary in any way. As a mom myself, who is often at home with my kids when protests are happening, I am looking for a way to get involved and thought others might be doing the same. Let's show up to honor Tyre's mom, RowVaughn, who has had to be braver than I can imagine, and represent her son and family in these unspeakable circumstances.
Need to know: City Council meetings can be long, and begin at 3:30. Don't worry about being late, or not being able to stay until the end -- your presence is encouraged in any way! Parking: Can be tricky since it's downtown, so carpool if you can, be prepared to arrive early. Signs: bring 'em if you want the council to know why you're there. Demands from organizers at Decarcerate Memphis can be found below.
ALSO! There's a county commission meeting the day before this city council meeting. County commission meeting details below. If you have availability then instead of Tuesday, by all means, attend the county commission meeting!
