The Heritage Fine Arts Guild Presents: Moments in Nature: A Personal Journaling Paint‑Out with Jody Walker

Workshop description: Nature journaling can be used to help remember a special place or time in nature. But it also can be used to explore your sense of wonder, for marveling at the details, for recording your thoughts, or for capturing the beauty of a special area. Best of all, a nature journal is entirely yours. You only have to please yourself. You can experiment with different subjects, unique perspectives, or try new techniques, and perhaps discover a deeper connection to nature through your art.

Workshop Details:
📅 Date: Saturday, June 6, 2026
⏰ Time: 9 am – noon (and optionally, beyond)
📍 Location: Carson Nature Center, 3000 W Carson Drive, Littleton, CO 80120 (see below)
💲 Cost: $35 for Guild members | $75 for non-members
📝 Register: https://www.heritage-guild.com/workshopsevents.html. Payment serves as registration.

Location: Carson Nature Center - https://www.ssprd.org/nature [Details on location, parking, etc., can all be found on the website]. Note: given the time of year and popularity of this area near the Platte river, available parking will be limited to the (unpaved) RTD overflow lot just to the West of Aspen Grove and the main (paved) RTD lot. Carpooling is encouraged, and we will be happy to shuttle anyone with limited mobility from there to our meeting point at the Nature Center before the workshop, between 8:30 and close to 9 am.

Materials: We will be using watercolor and ink as a medium. Please bring the supplies and any equipment you like to use for travel or plein-air painting:

Suggested Supply list:
Limited/easily portable supply of watercolor paints (e.g. a travel kit) containing small tubes or pan colors
A small palette (for color mixing)
A small set of brushes (suitable for watercolor)
Watercolor Sketchbook or watercolor paper (140lb min.) taped to a board (e.g. clipboard)
Pencil and pens for sketching/outlining, preferably fine-tip: .01-.03; waterproof – also great to have: white ink and gum eraser
Water bottle (for painting and staying hydrated!)
Paper towels or rag
Sunscreen and adequate clothing for sun protection (note: we will be painting mostly in the shade, under large Cottonwood trees just to the North of the Nature Center).
Snacks/sack lunch (optional) for sharing/eating with the group

Jody is bringing some extra supplies in case anyone is missing anything.

About Jody Walker:
Jody retired from her Parks and Recreation career in 2010. For the past 15+ years since then, she has worked in the Environmental Education field, leading hikes and programs focusing on our natural environment, and teaching nature journaling. She has taken classes and received state and national certifications as an environmental educator and has worked for National Parks, Conservation Areas, Nature Preserves, Wildlife Refuges, National Forests, the Botanic Garden at the Plains Conservation Center, and Douglas Land Conservancy. Throughout, nature and art have been a consistent and wonderful experience for anyone with a passion for either—or both.
This workshop is made possible in part by funding from the Scientific and Cultural Facilities District (SCFD) and the Littleton Arts & Culture Grant. We are grateful for their continued support of the arts in our community.
