MODULE 1 | Public Realm and Highway Transformation
About this Event
Module 1: Public Realm and Highway Transformation explores the principles of creating high-quality, accessible and inclusive public spaces that support successful town centres and high streets. Led by Andy Cameron, Transport Consultant and Urban Designer, the module examines the relationship between highway design, public realm improvements and effective place-making. It considers the practical application of design principles, relevant legislation and standards, alongside the challenges of delivering and managing public realm investment.
Contributions from Colmore BID and Jan Kattein Architects provide real-world examples of long-term stewardship, stakeholder engagement and community-led regeneration, demonstrating how thoughtful design and collaborative approaches can transform streets and public spaces.
The module combines expert presentations, best-practice case studies, panel discussions and an interactive workshop to equip participants with practical skills for developing and delivering public realm improvements.
Participants will explore the challenges of balancing accessibility, community safety, stakeholder priorities, project costs, maintenance and long-term value. Through a collaborative design exercise, they will assess a town centre challenge and develop a realistic public realm intervention, translating place-based evidence into practical proposals.
