Join us in a deep dive into modern beauty myths. Snail slime, filters, corsets, tweakments, can today's beauty culture ever be feminist?
About this Event

Can women truly control their own beauty narratives? We believe so.

Join East Asian Girl Gang at the Allbright Townhouse on 3rd October for an engaging panel discussion. We will delve into modern beauty myths and ask whether a culture that includes snail slime, filters, corsets, ‘tweakments’ and more can ever be truly feminist. We also explore East Asian feminine identity and aim to reframe the way we think about beauty, to create a more empowering, inclusive community.

With panellists writer Carolyn Asome, in discussion with Xu Yang and Dr Terry Loong, we’ll cover both the fun sides of beauty culture, like K-beauty, J-beauty, and snail lotions, alongside delving into the darker side of the industry, with key insights from books by Elise Hu and Ellen Atlanta. The event will be moderated by Founder of East Asian Girl Gang, Eileen Willett.

Our panellists discuss the impact of beauty standards in a social media-led world and explore which aspects of the culture we can reframe through a feminist lens. We’ll take a deep dive into increasingly impossible beauty standards, the impact they have on young women, and what empowerment truly means to us.

This event promises a thought-provoking discussion on the impact of beauty culture and the methods we can all use to reclaim it as a feminist space.
