About this Event
Originating in late 18th-century Staffordshire, England, the method involves applying an acidic “tea” solution—traditionally made from boiled tobacco and colored with materials like iron oxide—onto a freshly coated layer of wet slip (a fluid clay mixture). When the two liquids meet, a rapid chemical and physical interaction occurs: differences in surface tension and acidity trigger a dynamic instability that causes the distinctive tree-like patterns to spread across the surface.
Participants will learn both the historical context and hands-on techniques behind this unique decorative style, gaining insight into how chemistry and fluid dynamics shape ceramic design.
You must bring 2-3 leather hard pieces.
