“Mobile Life”: Art Workshop with Hitoko Okada

In the context of Berlin artist Christina Kubisch’s sound installationThe Conference of Trees at the Goethe Space Toronto, Hitoko Okada invites participants to explore the bonsai as a living, shifting presence—and to consider what it might mean to listen to nature, to one another, and to perspectives beyond our own.
In a small-group setting, participants will move around Kubisch’s installation, making visual responses along the way. Through mixed-media collage and mark-making on paper, the workshop becomes a collective art practice: a way to experiment with relational thinking, hold contradictions as multiple truths, and move beyond binary ways of seeing.
How can we practice seeing multiple perspectives as a whole? What does relational thinking look like? And what might happen when we make art together rather than alone?
No previous artistic experience is needed. Come as you are—all materials will be supplied.
About Hitoko Okada
Hitoko Okada is an interdisciplinary artist based in Hamilton, Ontario, whose practice spans fashion, theatre, installation, social practice and curatorial projects. As an arts facilitator, Okada creates experimental learning spaces through accessible artistic practices.
Their projects have been presented at Cambridge Art Galleries, the Art Gallery of Burlington, the Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre, the Royal Botanical Gardens and Theatre Replacement in Vancouver. Okada has deepened their research into ancestral folk-heritage textile craft through residencies at Haystack Mountain School of Craft, Kawashima Textile School, the Art Gallery of Ontario and The Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity. They recently completed an MFA at Emily Carr University, where they researched Japanese indigo.
This workshop responds to The Conference of Trees, Christina Kubisch’s living sound installation at Goethe Space Toronto, on view September 9–October 23, 2026.
