The ML CUUPS chapter is hosting a Winter Solstice gathering at Mountain Light UU Church led by Tony Burton and Lara Burton. All are welcome. The celebration of the return of the light, shown by longer days and shorter nights beginning on or around December 21, is very old, and has been observed by many cultures and religious beliefs. The ancient Romans celebrated Saturnalia, in honor of the god Saturn, for a week in mid-December. Many pagan and heathen belief systems celebrate Yule.
Our most famous Winter Solstice in modern times is Christmas, celebrated more as a secular holiday by most rather than a religious one. In Sweden, there is Saint Lucia’s Day. Both the Zuni and Hopi First People of America people celebrate such a holiday.
We will celebrate the Winter Solstice with an indoor fire bowl, and with a ceremony called a “water despacho”, which does not require a fire pit. Details will be given at the celebration.
Dress is casual, but if you have ritual clothing you wish to wear, feel free to do so. It’s totally up to you.
We look forward to seeing you at the celebration! Have a blessed Yule!
