In Dr. King's 1963 March On Washington speech he wrote: "When the architects of our republic wrote the magnificent words of the Constitution and Declaration of Independence, they were signing a promissory note to which every American was to fall heir. It is obvious today that America has defaulted on this promissory note insofar as her citizens of color are concerned. Instead of honoring this sacred obligation, America has given the Negro people a bad check, a check which has come back insufficient funds."

The panel will discuss where America is today 60 years since Dr. King shared his "Dream" for our nation. The articulation of the "Promissory Note" and the "Hope" for a Beloved Community will be explored. In the spring of 1963 civil rights leaders were filmed discussing the challenges the Negro faced. Today's panel discussion is a partial reenactment of that 1963 conversation that will bring two points in American history together.


Concert Celebrating: Civil Rights Songs & Spirituals, Soloist Robert Sims and SLCC Chamber Singers

Wednesday, February 15, 2023, 7:30 to 9 P.M with reception from 7 - 7:30 pm and desserts after the concert. South City Campus, Multipurpose Room (SCC - 1-030/032)

SLCC Chamber Singers are joined by award-winning, lyric baritone Robert Sims. Most notably the winner of the American traditions competition, Mr. Sims is known for his dynamic interpretation of songs. Join us for an evening of African American Spirituals, civil rights songs, and other inspiring music as we honor Dr. Martin Luther King.
