MLA John Dewey Society Symposium

Johns Hopkins University’s Master of Liberal Arts program is proud to co-sponsor the 81st conference of the John Dewey Society being held in collaboration with the Annual Meeting of the Philosophy of Education Society. Join us from March 6, 2025, to explore a pre-conference workshop, Philosophy of Education Beyond the Human, and the conference theme, Education and the Future of the Future.

Reports on the growing instability of planetary systems, and increases in natural disasters, force us to rethink education and ponder challenging questions. This attractive conference setting will provide the backdrop as we convene to address thought-provoking questions, including: What to make of education with such a gloomy vision of the future? Does “the future” still have a future as the idea that animates education? Should the future be the idea that animates education at all? How do we grapple educationally with the social inequalities and injustices that are not only persistent but, in many cases, exacerbated by the climate crisis and related ecological problems?

This year’s program includes concurrent session papers, symposia, and general session keynotes that will take up this important theme while advancing and stretching your thinking. In addition, the conference includes an address from PES Kneller lecturer, Philosopher Todd May, as well as a presidential address from current PES President Claudia Ruitenberg. There also are events organized by several PES committees and special interest groups, and many opportunities to become more involved in the organization and to socialize with old friends and new colleagues.
