On April 14, 1845, Ormsby MacKnight Mitchel, the founder of the Cincinnati Observatory, first used the Merz und Mahler 11-inch refractor, then the third largest telescope in the world. He observed the Moon, Jupiter, and Saturn. To commemorate the 180th anniversary of this historic event, we invite you to a FREE public viewing on April 13th, from 12 PM to 3 PM. Weather permitting, you can look at the Sun through this very telescope. Tours of the observatory will be offered every 30 minutes throughout the event.
