perform new works by Jonathan Hannau, Liza Sobel Crane and Alex Taylor

Missing Piece joins with two Chicago composer/performers pianist Jonathan Hannau and soprano Liza Sobel Crane to premiere new works for piano trio and soprano by composers Alex Taylor and Jonathan Hannau, as well as a new string duo for Missing Piece written by Liza Sobel Crane. Also included in the program will be the first book of György Kurtág’s seminal “Kafka Fragments” for violin and soprano.

Missing Piece is south side Chicago-based musical duo, violinist Dan Galat and cellist Kelly Quesada, who endeavor to commission new musical works and works from other artistic disciplines on themes that inspire others to connect with their community, care for our environment, listen deeply to ourselves and others, and speak out against injustice. Since its formation in 2022, Missing Piece has commissioned and premiered over thirty new works, including standard notation, text and graphic scores, poetry, film, ceramics, movement, and improvisation.

Jonathan Hannau is a Chicago-based composer and pianist devoted to the surreal, minimal, and abstract possibilities of music. He actively embraces eclecticism and explores concepts of narrative, drama, and stark expression by evoking a kaleidoscopic range of timbres.

A regular collaborator, he has performed with numerous ensembles and solo artists throughout the city of Chicago and abroad. In early 2024 he made his Chicago classical music radio debut on WFMT (98.7) with violinist Hannah Christiansen. He is one half of the piano percussion duo, “Flannau Duo”, and is also the pianist in the newly formed chamber ensemble “Mycelium New Music” which made its premiere in the 2024/2025 season. He looks forward to continuing his role as Artistic Director of the Chicago Composers Orchestra.

In April 2025 he released a neoclassical EP titled Sundial [https://bigoandtwigetti.bandcamp.com/album/sundial] that was done in collaboration with Sleeping Streets [https://open.spotify.com/artist/25BEL3iyXxUqNPh5wVhEDT?si=-gB1R82sRNKw4l4sHWTfOg] (Gtr) and Jeff Roy [https://open.spotify.com/artist/2TKigSrU6lcEAq168uMq2g?si=KS8yzrvmTwizLia0aV2-Lw] (Strings) and released through the label Bigo & Twigetti [https://bigoandtwigetti.co.uk/].

Liza Sobel Crane is a Chicago based composer and soprano. Her compositions are often influenced by social issues. Venues her music has been performed in include Carnegie Hall, Le Poisson Rouge, Symphony Space, Bang on a Can, Aspen, Creative Lab, Aldeburgh Britten-Pears Young Artist Programme, Norfolk New Music Workshop, Brevard, Lakes Area Music Festival, and Bowdoin. Performers that have played her music include: Orchestra of St. Luke's, Minnesota Orchestra, Ensemble Dal Niente, Thalea Quartet, Spektral Quartet, Cygnus Ensemble, Third Coast Percussion, Nouveau Classical Project, and Ekmeles. Liza was a Fulbright scholar to the UK.

As a singer, Liza performs standard and new repertoire, and numerous composers have written pieces for her. She sang the world premiere of her opera, I DID, DID I?, with the Zafa Collective at Chicago’s Poetry Foundation. She also performed George Crumb's Apparition at Constellation as part of Chicago’s Ear Taxi Festival. For more information, see her website, lizasobel.com [http://lizasobel.com/]

Alex Taylor (b. 1988) has been commissioned and performed by prominent artists in his native New Zealand and abroad, including Orchestra Wellington (NZ), Enso Quartet (US), Ensemble U (EE), Ensemble Proton Bern (CH), Susan Narucki (US), Justine Cormack (NZ), Steven Schick (US), and the Tanglewood Music Center (US). He recently completed his Ph.D. in Composition at the University of California San Diego under the supervision of Lei Liang, and currently teaches Theory and Composition at Illinois State University.

As well as composing, Alex is also a multi-instrumentalist, vocalist, conductor, writer, and music educator. His music has been featured on several recent CD releases, including Henry Wong Doe’s Perspectives on Rattle Records; Alex’s own solo album of art song, Dryad, is available on Bandcamp.
